GEORGE T. DORAN (1939-2011): THE FATHER OF S.M.A.R.T. GOALS
George Doran worked as the director of corporate planning for the Washington Water Power Company. He later became a consultant and in 1981 published a short article titled, "There’s a SMART Way to Write Management’s Goals and Objectives". Just over a single page in length, it is doubtful that Doran could have predicted how the original concept would take off and evolve and be adopted across so many different domains.
In a 2010 interview (see video clip), just a year before his death, Doran explained that the original method was developed from the ground up.
